Horatio hummed as he waddled his way along the stony beach. The air was rather chilly, in the way 'chilly' meant for a naturally cold climate. Yes, the young male could certainly feel the wind on his body, though it couldn't reach through his insulating feathers. It was strange, in a way, for the autumn weather was not enough to have cause for a huddle, but still strong enough for the nipping bite of the wind that Horatio felt now.
He arched his neck and shook out his body. A sparkle at the corner of his eye drew his attention to the shimmering ocean and Horatio stopped for a moment, watching the deep blue of the distance, and the small waves breaking against the pebbled beach. The penguin stretched his body and raised his flippers before shaking himself down again. He rotated his neck to tidy some stray feathers and began moving at a quicker pace, seemingly inspired by some idea that had entered his head. He wondered at that moment, what the others of his age were up to. What with the wind today he doubted many would be swimming. No, most likely they were up on the island, chattering away as normal.
Horatio's humming increased as he drew away from the shore and onto red rock. He was in a good mood, but this was usual for him. His bright eyes darted around and spied a few other penguins dotted about on the beach. Curiosity, it seemed, did not only affect felines but avians too, for the bird's mind instantly began to wonder what these individuals were up to on this fine day. He couldn't help it really, social creature that he was. The problem was how to choose which to talk to, or how to create a gathering out of the scattered penguins. Calling out to all of them would seem strange, he thought. Instead he headed in a direction in which appeared more than a few individuals. He nodded his head in greeting, barely able to keep the smile out of his eyes.

OOC: First time RPing a penguin. Here we go. xD [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=width,450,true][bg=00e4ff] Adele turned around, to see a penguin greeting some of her friends. Deciding to be friendly, Adele nodded in return, but as she didn't know him, she waddled off too the beach shore. The wind was almost spiking with a slight nip of cold, but she didn't mind. She was a penguin, after all. She stared at the waves. Boredom could never be kept away from Adele, except when she was swimming.
The problem was, Adele realised, was the waves had something inside them, waiting. She nearly fell over when she saw a tall, black fin emerge from a wave at least ten meters away from her. Deciding swimming wasn't an option, she tried her hardest to get back to the shore. No wonder no one is swimming, she thought, There's a bloody whale! With a look of panic in her eyes, Adele managed to get higher up on the shore, and stared back at the orca. Gone. Same as swimming for the day.
Waddling back up to her friends, Adele called to them, and shook her head to try and get rid of a bit of cold. She told them all about the whale, and how cold it was, and not to go down.

He'd approached the huddle of penguins with intentions of mingling and chatting, and for the most part the other penguins seemed to follow along with Horatio's plan. However one of them seemed to be a little put-off by his presence. Oh sure, she nodded, polite as could be, but didn't stick around for very long. Horatio nodded at her in return but stepped aside to let her pass. For a while then he remained in the small group, listening and discussing the news of the day. He himself didn't have too much to contribute, apart from acknowledging that he hadn't been up to much that morning apart from going for a wander.
At one point in the conversation, the talking died down and the small group of penguins paused. With this opportunity most of them looked towards the shore, following a line of sight towards the stray Adele. She was heading out into the water, but something startled her and she turned back to the beach. Horatio turned to the penguin beside him, curiousity etched across his face. The other penguin shrugged. Despite the group's curiousity, none of them moved towards Adele, for fear of what had driven her out of the sea. They didn't have to wait too long though, for soon enough the female returned, panicked, evidently. The other penguins, this girl's friends, moved towards her first, and Horatio hung back a moment, casting a glance behind him to see what anyone else was up to. There didn't seem to be other excitement going on though, so he too moved forwards.
The group he'd been with before had apparently been asking their friend questions which she had been answering. Horatio had not heard of what she'd seen yet though. He joined the group and stood beside her. "Ah...you're Amy, right?" He thought for a second before correcting himself. This female was close to his age, but he did not know her at all, though he knew he'd heard her name before. "No, sorry, it's Adele, isn't it? What, if you don't mind me asking, caused you to head back to shore so suddenly?"

Laying in the sand behind a tree, Squishy rested alone, listening to the chit-chat of the other penguins. She wasn't listening per say... merely 'observing'. She had watched the young male Horatio walk up to a group of peers and start to join into the conversations. Curiously, a female she recalled to be named 'Adele' seemed to have wandered towards to ocean, away from the group. Squishy had such a nosey personality that she, of course, immanently started wondering why the female had walked away shortly after Horatio joined in. Maybe they don't get along she whispered to herself. Or perhaps they're secret LOVERS! What a scandal!. She giggled, sitting up and then leaning against the tree. She stared at the grass and away from the water and others that were standing around. But something had caught the corner of her eye. A black fin emerged from the water and had sunk back down as quickly as it had arose. Wow, that's dangerous. Squishy thought, shocked but quite glad that Adele had seen it and quickly retreated. No harm done, besides the fact no one could go swimming for a while.
Deciding that just watching was boring, she sat up and waddled towards the crowd of penguins. She stood a small distance away from them. Hey, Horatio she said with a smile. Horatio and Squishy were the same age, so it was only natural for Squishy to know who he was. It was normal for Squishy to know who EVERYONE was, really. But Horatio was special, since they had talked beforehand when they were much younger. Everyone else in the circle was practically a stranger to her, she could barely remember most of their names. Squishy had realized that Horatio was already addressing another female. Embarrassed for interrupting (even though no one had even seemed to notice her presence), she waddled closer towards the group and waited for someone to converse with.

The giant black fin that cut through the surface sent a shot of adrenaline through KP's veins. He always did appreciate a little danger when it came his way. The penguin had been lazily bobbing with the waves, letting the particularly cold water wash over his yellow-green throat. Being a penguin, a good chunk of his life is spent in the water by default, but KP took a liking to the salty waves when he finally lost all of his down fluff. Having little sense of his safety and somewhat lacking in common sense, KP stayed in the water long after his friends retorted to the safety and warmth of the shore. It was only minutes afterwards when the orca appeared. The adrenaline caused the young bird to flip from his back to his belly and plunge underneath the water in the opposite direction by instinct. Taking advantage of his sudden rush, KP decided to show off some moves as he flipped into the air with additional height, hoping that he could impress some of his older peers as he maneuvered away from the whale- which unfortunately spotted KP as an easy target and was catching up to him. Realizing his stupidity, he exchanged his fancy tricks for full blown torpedo back to shore. The whale had given up as he got into shallower waters and KP shot out of the water like a bullet back to dry rocky land. Breathing heavily, he shot a glance back into the water to see no evidence of the creature. KP desperately hoped that none of his friends had been watching the second half of his runaway ordeal. That would ruin his rep for good. With a shake of his feathers to rid himself of the chilling water, the feathers on his head fluffed up to their normal scruffy state. KP put his best nonchalant swagger-like waddle to use as he approached the group of penguins.

Adele didn’t seem inclined to reply at first. Horatio wondered if she’d heard him. He looked about him while waiting. Not the sort to feel uncomfortable in silences, Horatio simply wondered what else was going on. Also he still hadn’t the faintest idea of what had caused Adele to return to shore so suddenly. The male scanned the sparkling horizon, but could not for long due to the glare of sunlight upon water. He looked away and his attention was soon caught by a glimpse of an approaching penguin. Horatio watched her, for it was another female of his peer group, and soon identified her as Squishy, a penguin he’d known in chickhood. Known, as in played with, talked with, from time to time, as they’d often found themselves together in the care of another adult while their parents went to fish. However he couldn’t claim to be best friends with her, no matter how nice she seemed. Squishy greeted him and then made her way towards the group’s outskirts. Horatio stepped aside to let her take her place in the circle. ”Hello!” he replied. He’d have introduced her to the group but he realised he didn’t know many of them very well, certainly only by appearance and not by name.
A few moments passed of gentle chatter, mainly from the nameless penguins. Horatio listened, nodded, grinned the whole way through. At one moment he stopped to watch the waves again. This time he noted a dark shape in the water, the figure of a penguin swimming. Adele had told them not to go swimming, so this fellow who was now in the water must not have been on the beach earlier. Horatio waited for a lull in the conversation before nodding his beak towards the water, indicating what was going on. Now, now, Horatio could see what had scared Adele, for above the waves rose a great monolithic fin, a pillar of terror belonging to one of the birds’ oldest enemies, the killer whale. Horatio watched, horrified, his heartbeat quickening as he watched the other penguin’s escape. The penguin foolishly started… “aquabatics” as the group on shore watched. Eventually though, the other penguin made it safely back to the beach, leaving the whale behind. When the other penguin approached them, Horatio could recognise the distinct fellow, with his weedy coloured throat, and of course, the ‘unique’ name of KP. Most penguins had heard of this guy’s name and his mother’s lack of creativity, though Horatio couldn’t admit to knowing him anymore than that. He felt compelled to speak though, ”Lucky break, eh?” The scene had been quite stunning, as well as terrifying.
